Having a neat and tidy home doesn’t always require weekly deep cleans. Often, it’s the small, consistent habits that make the biggest impact. Even if you don’t have an hour or two to spare each day, taking just a few minutes can lead to noticeable results—and, more importantly, a cleaner and more organized home. Here are eight 1-minute cleaning tasks that pros say make a big difference.
Swapping Out Dirty Dish Towels
We’ve all been there: There’s a mess on the counter, and we grab the nearest dish towel. But as we pick it up, we notice it’s wet—or worse, smells bad. So, take a moment and grab a fresh one or use paper towels instead.
“A quick towel swap keeps surfaces cleaner and helps avoid spreading bacteria,” says Marla Mock, president of Molly Maid, a Neighborly company.
Wiping Down the Kitchen Sink and Faucet
Is there a stink coming from your sink? Or does it always look dirty? “Wipe down the kitchen sink and faucet," Mock says. "This is an easy-to-miss spot, but it gets used constantly and can collect grime and create unwanted smells in just one day.”
Rinse Off the Bathroom Sink
There are few things as unpleasant as seeing dried toothpaste caked in the sink. While you might be in a rush, cleaning this is such a quick and easy task, according to Mock. “Wipe away toothpaste stains right after brushing," she says. "It only takes a second and prevents dried-on gunk later.”
Wiping Off the Bathroom Counter
Whether they end up sprayed with products or there’s powder from putting on makeup, bathroom counters sometimes look even dirtier and untidy than kitchen countertops.
Mock suggests taking a few moments to wipe down the bathroom counter. “It helps keep hair, dust, and product residue under control,” she says. To make this as fast as possible, consider buying cleaning wipes and storing them under your bathroom sink so they are always on hand.
Putting Dirty Clothes in the Hamper
Having clothes piled up on the floor or in a chair looks messy, explains Mock. “Always toss dirty clothes and blankets into a hamper instead of letting things pile up on the floor or furniture.”
Declutter Nightstands
Nightstands can become dumping grounds for everything from unread books to glasses of water and more, making your bedroom feel unsanctuary-like.
Mock recommends decluttering them to make the whole space feel more organized and tidy—because they're such small spaces, it will very likely take a minute (or less!) to sort through them.
Sort Mail Daily
The mail arrives every day, so why not take a minute to tackle it as it comes in? “Sort the mail as you get it," recommends Mock. "Throw out or recycle what you don’t need and put the rest in a designated spot, so it doesn’t turn into a clutter pile."
Clean Up Minor Messes as They Happen
Jen and Brian Boyle, owners of MaidThis Cleaning and members of the Thumbtack Pro Advisory Board, say a quick clean-up of those minor messes can make a big difference. So, don’t ignore them.
“For example, if your floor feels sticky because of a spill, even spot cleaning that area will go a long way toward keeping the rest of your home clean as well," they say. "Even if it feels like one more thing in the day, when you take 30 seconds to wipe up spills and splatter, to get crumbs off the floor or the table, or just care about the appearance of your home, it becomes that much easier to care for in the long run.”
